Understanding which category your film fits into

  • UDFF does not accept films that have been made with the assistance of Generative AI. This includes its usage throughout the filmmaking process, including - but not limited to - any associated marketing materials, as well as the generation of scenes, audio, and narration.

Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that can be used to generate content such as video, images, scripts, and sound. We understand that many industry-standard software suites have their own integrated machine learning features for editing and analysis purposes- this is different to Generative AI.

  • This is our most popular category, and features fictional short films of any genre.

  • Documentaries are non-fiction films that document some aspect of reality. Typically with the intention to inform, educate, inspire, or persuade.

  • A short film of any genre that primarily uses animation as a method of storytelling. Any animation style is welcome!

  • Short films that were created by Logan residents or produced - at any stage - in Logan.

  • Short films - either fiction or non-fiction - that centre the experiences, culture, and stories of those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Short films - either fiction or non-fiction - that are created by, or are about, First Nations people; focusing on their culture, experiences, and stories.

  • Short films - either fiction or non-fiction - with central characters, themes and narratives reflecting multicultural communities.

  • Music videos produced for Australian musicians.

  • Short films with narratives, subjects, and themes that are central to sports and sporting culture.

  • For media in all formats of visual storytelling with experimentation at its core. These films defy traditional storytelling conventions and instead focus on pushing the boundaries of filmmaking techniques.

  • Short films created by students and emerging filmmakers with less than three above-the-line film credits to their name on IMDb.

UDFF differentiates itself by ensuring that our film categories champion the communities our filmmakers identify with, and represent, in their work. While many films will comfortably fit into two or more categories, we recommend selecting one that you feel aligns closest to your film.
